NEWS AT NORTON MIDDLE SCHOOL

5th Grade Band Opportunity!

Our 5th grade students have the opportunity to particpate in our band program beginning the second semester.  Students are introduced to the various instruments during their Panther Time the week of November 18th.  There is an informational parent/student  meeting scheduled for December 3, 2019 beginning at 7PM.  The meeting will be held in the middle school cafeteria.  Parents will receive information on instrument rental and students will have an opporutnity to play a variety of instruments before a final decision is made.  Instruments will be delivered to the school on December 16 and students will have their first lesson that evening.  First Lesson night  begins at 7PM, concluding at approxiimately 8PM.  Questions?  Please contact Mr. Kaufman at ckaufman@nortonschools.org.

Addiction Support Group

 We are in the process of exploring the idea of forming an Addiction Support Group for our students whose lives have been touched by this disease.  The group would be under the guidance of Dr. Jessica Russo.  The mission,  to provide support to our students who are facing this challenge.  Frequently, students suffer in silence and feel they are the only ones struggling with addiction in their families.  We want our students to know they are not alone.  If your family has been touched by addiction, please feel free to reach out for support to either Dr. Russo, jrusso@nortonschools.org  or Mrs. McDonnell, jmcdonnell@nortonschools.org. 

Drama Club Auditions!

 We will be holding auditions Monday, November 18, 2019 for Norton Middle School's spring play.  Auditions will run from 2:35-5:00PM.  Arrarngements should be made for pick-up at 5PM.   If students have not yet picked up an application or script please do so by stopping by room 251 or logging on to the Drama Club's Google Classroom with code 37qbn.  Callbacks will be held later next with, a date has not been determined.  Please email questions to Mr. Davis, mdavis@nortonschools.org.

Lost & Found

Is your child missing shoes, jeans, hoodie, lunch box, backpack...........??????  We have four 6' tables filled with lost items  that were collected during the first quarter of the school year.   Please stop by the cafeteria and see if you can claim any items.  We announce this to the students daily and very few items have been claimed.

Start Creating!

Chess Club Monday immediately after school.

 Chess Club will meet every Monday until April.  The goal is to provide a friendly competition along with advancing skills in the game of chess.  All skill levels are welcome as students will be paired up accordingly.  Participation is voluntary; however brackets for play will be developed and advance notice of absence would be appreciated.  This is a fee free club!  Registration information is available in the cafeteria.  To get club updates use your cell phone, text 81010 with the message @chess19.  Feel free to email questions to Mr. Petit, apetit@nortonschools.org

It's time for ACADEMIC CHALLENGE!

Are you a fan of the TV show Jeopardy?  Would you enjoy competing against your classmates on academic questions?  Our Academic Challenge Team may be perfect for you!  Our academic challenge team meets every Wednesday in room 244.   Mrs. Butcher is returning as our coach and is looking to train a team to compete at area Middle School Academic Challenge Team Tournaments.  The club will be meeting on Wednesdays and is open to all students in grades 5-8.  A $25 fee is charged for particpation.   Parents please arrange for a 3:30PM pick-up.  Questions may be emailed to lbutcher@nortonschools.org  

Be The Change Club meets every Wednesday.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to create positive change in your school and in your community? Did you know you can help impact and change the lives of others? Student members participate in various activities that help promote a positive culture and spread empathy, kindness, compassion and acceptance throughout the school and community. Students will work together to help effect positive change through innovative and creative ideas that help to build school pride and stronger community-school ties.  Be The Change Club is looking for new members!  This club is open to any student in grades 5-8.  This is a fee-free club, and no pre-registration is required.  Students, come join us on Wednesdays from 02:45-03:30- Please arrange for pick-up promptly at 3:30pm.

Come join the FUN! SIP CLUB MEETS Thursdays after school!

The SIP Club promotes social interaction among peers without the use of technology.  Students play cards, board games and participate in outdoor fun!  The club is open to students of all grade-levels and is sponsored by staff member, Mrs. Arnold.  Students may attend any Thursday without prior arrangements, students will gather in the cafeteria at the dismissal bell.  Pick-up time is 3:30PM.  If you have any questions, you may contact Mrs. Arnold at marnold@nortonschools.org.

Youth Fellowship Group, IMPACT CLUB, meets in the Panther Room every Tuesday!

 Each Tuesday a youth fellowship club will meet in the Middle School Panther Room.  This is a student led group with the Student Leadership Team also meeting once a week.  The objective of the group is to connect with each other through fun activities creating a positive IMPACT in the middle school.  Students wanting to attend will report to the Panther Room at the dismissal bell.  A student does not have to commit to every Tuesday, but can attend as their schedule allows.  Parents please arrange pick-up at 3:30PM.  

6th graders participate in a new community program entitled: TomTod.

Each Thursday our 6th graders will participate in lessons with our community partner program called TomTod, which stands for tomorrow's ideas today.  TomTod's empowers middle school students to explore and launch imaginative ideas that spark positive change in their community and the world.  Students will grapple with the importance of new ideas and thinking critically. They gain confidence in how they communicate, understand how to research and explore new ideas, and think deeply about how our actions influence each other and how we can all work together for the common good.
If you have a 6th grader, please ask about the TomTod program and presenter, Mr. Pat.   

Drop-in for Donuts

Please join us for donuts and conversation focused on improving the middle school.  Each quarter the administration, counseling department and available teaching staff will join parents for coffee and donuts.  It is an informal opportunity to share ideas and suggestions for improvement.  Please feel free to bring younger children.  We will meet in the Panther Room from 8:00AM - 8:45AM.  Our kick-off meeting is Thursday, September 19.  Other dates are as follows:  November 19, February 19 and May 19.  Please join us!

At times we all need a little help from our friends.......Norton's Panther Closet has clothes, shoes, coats and school supplies available for free.  Please contact our Counseling Department at 330-825-5607 and ask for either Mrs. McDonnell or Dr. Russo and they will assist you.
