The Community...

The Community of Norton is located in Northeast Central Ohio in Summit County just south of Akron.  Norton is a charming mixture of both business development and a well preserved rural residential area.  The population of Norton is approximately 11,500 (2000 Census).  The community offers a warm hometown atmosphere, while still being accessible to the metropolitan centers of Akron and Canton.

 

The School System...

The mission of Norton City Schools is to inspire life-long learning in a caring, safe environment through challenging educational experiences for every child every day. To accomplish this, we continually develop our curriculum to encourage students to think independently and critically. We make our educational decisions based on our vision statement….Every Child…Every Day.

Our current enrollment is approximately 2500 students. They are housed at one primary building for grades PreK and K, one elementary building for grades 1 through 4, one middle school building for grades 5-8 and one high school for grades 9-12.

 

Dedicated Faculty...

At Norton, we have a staff that is dedicated to students and their learning.  Forty-nine percent of our teachers have attained the level of a Master's degree. One current staff member is National Board Certified. Several of the district's administrative team began their careers in Norton and have pursued advancements in their own educational pathways becoming central office administrators and building principals; a true testament to their dedication to Norton City Schools.

 

Parent Involvement...

Norton City Schools have a very active Parent-Teacher Organizations, Academic Boosters, Athletic Boosters, and Music Boosters which provide services and supplemental funding to the schools.  Participation is on a voluntary basis, but we encourage all parents to become involved.  Parental participation makes a significant difference in student success at school.

 

Board of Education...

The Norton Board of Education is your voice in the district.  The Board consists of five elected members, each serving a four-year term.  Board Meetings are held on the second Monday of each month at 7:00 PM in the Panther Room at Norton Middle School. All are welcome and encouraged to attend.

 

Curriculum...

The Norton City School District offers an instructional program which meets the needs of all the district’s students. Each course of study is correlated to the Ohio Academic Content Standards and is reviewed and revised on a regular basis. Teachers are involved in the revision process and participate fully in the adoption of textbooks and materials.

Students receive a full complement of classes including English, mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, health and physical education,  and the fine arts in grades K-12. Foreign language, family and consumer sciences, dual credit courses, STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics), Advanced Placement, and the Career Tech programs become available as students progress through the path toward graduation. 

 

Technology is integrated through each and every class that is offered at Norton City Schools. Classrooms are equipped with interactive white boards, projection systems, document cameras, and other mobile devices for teachers and students.

We also offer a Developmental Preschool at our Primary Building. This is an early intervention program designed to promote growth and development in specific areas necessary for later academic success.

Special education and related services are provided by professionals in the general education classroom, resource classroom, and co-teach environments.

Norton City Schools also offers summer enrichment programs to our elementary and middle school students. We offer a relaxed summer reading program, coordinated by Norton teachers, for students in grades 1-4. For one week, Camp Invention makes its home in Norton. Students in kindergarten through sixth grade are welcome to participate. It encourages students' creativity, innovation, and problem solving skills. In addition, Norton City Schools has partnered with Wadsworth City Schools to offer summer STEM and coding camps for those who have an avid interest in technology.
